Exceed And Excel’s son Flamberge has claimed his second win at the top level after overcoming a wide barrier to overpower the leaders to win the G1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 27.
The Peter Moody-trained six-year-old, winner of the G1 Goodwood Handicap (1200m) at Morphettville last year, came across from his wide barrier for jockey Damian Lane to settle third behind favourite, Lonhro filly Heatherly, before running on strongly for victory.
A homebred for David and Jenny Moodie, Flamberge is out of G3 winner Razor Blade and is a full-brother to G1 performer Curtana and half-brother to Sunburnt Land, who was also a Stakes winner and G1 placegetter.
Exceed And Excel (who stands this season at a fee of €40,000) is the sire of 109 Stakes winners including fellow Darley stallions Fulbright, Helmet, Outstrip and Sidestep.
