Darnation and Fallen Angel provided a thrilling Classic-winning double for their sire Too Darn Hot as they landed the German and Irish 1,000 Guineas on Sunday, 26 May. It was also a double for Karl Burke who prepares both fillies.
First up was Darnation who became Too Darn Hot's first Classic winner when landing the G2 German 1,000 Guineas at Dusseldorf. Travelling well throughout the mile contest, the filly moved into contention with 400m to run, quickening up well under Adrie de Vries, she kicked clear of her rivals in the final 100m to post a comfortable two-and-a quarter length victory.
Darnation is now the winner of three Black Type races from seven starts. Shedding her maiden tag on her second start last July by a hugely impressive 10-length margin in novice company at Thirsk, she then stepped up in class to land the G3 Prestige Stakes by two lengths at Goodwood and the G2 May Hill Stakes at Doncaster by three lengths.
Owned and bred by Newtown Anner Stud, Darnation is the first foal out of the Galileo mare, Monday Monday, herself an own-sister to Stakes-performer, Exemplar and a half-sister to Classic-winning filly, Blue Bunting.
Just under an hour later at the Curragh, Ireland, Fallen Angel, who is owned by Clipper Logistics, ran out the decisive winner of the G1 Irish 1,000 Guineas. Ridden by Daniel Tudhope, she travelled strongly and made virtually all before sprinting clear of the field with two furlongs to run. She stormed home, unchallenged, to a two and three-quarter length win.
Fallen Angel was winning her third Group race and second at the highest level, having won the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last term.
Bred by Branton Court Stud LLP, Fallen Angel is the fourth foal out of the G2-winning and G1-placed mare Agnes Stewart (Lawman) who has produced three other winners, including G3-performer, Divine Jewel.
Too Darn Hot enjoyed an excellent start to his career at stud last year when he sired four Group-winning two-year-olds. Recently he was crowned Champion First Season Sire by the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association in Australia. So far this year, Too Darn Hot has sired six Black Type winners, including Broadsiding who landed the G1 Champagne Stakes at Randwick Racecourse.
