One of the modern misnomers of thoroughbred breeding is that you need an early cover if you want precocious success.
Royal Ascot is the first true test of a two-year-old and this century, 24 winners were conceived in either May or June, 15 of which came in races over the minimum trip. Recent winners include last season's Windsor Castle winner Chipotle, speedster Campanelle in the 2020 Queen Mary, the Darley-sired Raffle Prize in the same race a year before plus the impressive Calyx in the Coventry in 2018.
Further back, New Approach’s impressive son Dawn Approach, born in late April, landed the Coventry en route to European Champion Juvenile honours and a victory in the 2,000 Guineas.
A late cover is no barrier to sales success either, with 249 yearlings in 2021 making £100,000 or more. Heading the list at 1,100,000gns is the May-born colt out of Anthem Alexander (by Galileo), with nine more yearlings making over half a million, including two by Dubawi.
In total, Dubawi had seven yearlings sell for £100,000 or more with late covers, Teofilo had five, Night Of Thunder and Profitable three apiece, with Cloth Of Stars, Cracksman, Farhh, Ribchester, and Shamardal all on two.
